This should not be forgotten in any case: With April 15, the winter tire obligation ends in this country. The ÖAMTC has some advice for the change ready.
Before then, however, it’s still mandatory to be on winter tires when driving in wintry conditions. In warmer weather, ÖAMTC advises slowly switching to summer tires. However, there is no need to be in a hurry from April 15, says ÖAMTC technician Steffan Kerbl in a statement: “There is no obligation to use summer tires.”
“For winter tires to drive in high temperatures is less problematic than summer tires in the cold. If the winter tires are already scraping the four-millimeter limit for tread depth anyway, you can continue to drive them for some time with an adapted driving style without further ado, instead of disposing of them immediately,” Kerbl continues.
So as long as the temperatures aren’t summery, he says there’s nothing to worry about with winter tires – only then will they degrade significantly and start “smearing away.” He said that one advantage that summer tires still have to be given credit for is better grip as soon as temperatures no longer drop below zero and it’s no longer cold and wet.
According to tire expert Kerbl, more and more drivers are asking themselves whether it would not make sense to switch to all-weather or all-season tires. From his point of view, this question can be answered with “yes.” Because: “It depends on the individual situation. There are good all-season tires – but compared to summer and winter tires, they are always a compromise.”
Change tires yourself? The expert strongly advises against it. “The tires are getting bigger and heavier, mistakes when jacking up can result in property damage to the underbody and sometimes even serious injuries. The money saved, on the other hand, is comparatively small,” Kerbl concludes.
